“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” – Albert Schweitzer

The Arc of Grays Harbor recently attended the volunteer fair held at the Eagles hall here in Aberdeen. It was a fun opportunity to meet a bunch of wonderful, engaged and interesting people, all of whom were interested in channeling their passion, efforts and energies toward improving our community.

I was impressed at the sheer number of opportunities for people to volunteer their services, from animal welfare groups, to people with disabilities, to foster parenting organizations to museums to religious service organizations. If you have an area of interest, there’s an organization here in the harbor that needs your help.

Here at The Arc of Grays Harbor, we have an urgent need for people to help coach our Special Olympics teams and to help us organizationally through our board of directors and our associate board.

The Arc of GH does a good job supporting people without a lot of experience managing organizations because we reserve a portion of our board positions to people with developmental disabilities. This has helped us develop processes to help individuals grow their skill, confidence (and resume) to successfully serve on other governing boards… or even run for public office.

We also have a big need for people with specific skills on our board. Our bylaws identify a need for a lawyer, someone from the faith community, a health care provider as well as others. We understand that people with those skills are often busy, so we have are developing an associate board to cultivate access to those skills without impacting members busy lives. The job is perfect for retirees.

Our board of directors meeting is the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 here at our office. If you have an interest in helping promote support for people with developmental disabilities we would love to hear from you.
