Legislative Advocacy

Advocacy

The Arc of Grays Harbor is a nonprofit organization that advocates for disability rights and promotes the inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the community. Advocacy and educating legislators on the needs of people with IDD is important because it can lead to positive changes in policy and legislation. Many individuals with IDD face significant barriers to accessing necessary services and supports, which can limit their ability to live full and independent lives. By advocating for change and sharing their experiences, individuals and families can help legislators understand the challenges they face and the support they need. This can lead to changes in policy and legislation that can improve access to services, increase funding for programs, and promote greater inclusion in the community. By working together to advocate for change, we can help create a more equitable and inclusive society for all.

Parent Advocacy Groups

As members of the Washington State Parent Coalition (WSPC), The Arc of Grays Harbor hosts the Grays Harbor and Pacific County Parent Coalitions. Parents of children with an intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD) need to connect with other parents for support and resources. Throughout Washington State you will find Parent Coalitions that have parents and guardians who have walked the walk and who help parents organize their voices and be heard on issues important to them.

The Arc of Grays Harbor is also part of the Community Advocacy Coalition (CAC), a group of organizations from around Washington State that advocate for services and supports in the community for people with developmental disabilities. The CAC works to ensure that individuals with IDD have access to the resources and services they need to lead fulfilling lives and be active members of their communities.

Our Work with Local Legislators

Each year, The Arc of Grays Harbor hosts a legislative forum where we invite people from the community to speak with legislators from the 19th and 24th districts about the issues individuals with IDD and their families face in Grays Harbor. These forums provide an opportunity for individuals and families to share their experiences and advocate for change. Recordings of past legislative forums are available for viewing, allowing people to stay informed about ongoing advocacy efforts.

Get Involved, Join the Disability Movement Coalition

The Arc of Grays Harbor also has a Disability Movement Coalition, a group that meets monthly to discuss ways to inform and educate elected officials and the community at large about the successes and challenges of individuals with IDD and their families. This group is open to the public, and all are welcome to join. The group meets via Zoom from 4-5 pm on the third Tuesday of each month. By working together and advocating for change, The Arc of Grays Harbor is making a difference in the lives of individuals with IDD and their families in the community.

Raising Awareness

In addition to its advocacy efforts, The Arc of Grays Harbor also raises awareness by hosting yearly disability awareness events in March and disability employment awareness events in October. These events provide an opportunity to educate the public about the challenges faced by individuals with IDD and to promote greater understanding and inclusion. By hosting these events, The Arc of Grays Harbor is helping to break down barriers and promote greater understanding and inclusion for individuals with IDD in the community.
