Support groups for parents and caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) can provide a valuable source of support, information, and community. The TLC Parent Support Group is a free meet-up for parents and guardians raising a child, adolescent, or adult with disabilities or special healthcare needs. Here are some benefits of support groups for parents and caregivers of individuals with IDD:

  • Provides emotional support: Support groups can provide a safe and supportive environment where parents and caregivers can share their experiences, feelings, and concerns with others who are going through similar situations.
  • Offers practical advice and information: Support groups can provide valuable information and advice on various topics related to caregiving, such as navigating the healthcare system, accessing community resources, and managing stress.
  • Builds a sense of community: Support groups can help parents and caregivers build connections with others who share similar experiences and concerns, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Here are some types of support that parents and caregivers can receive in the TLC Parent Support Group:

  • Peer support: Participants can share their experiences, feelings, and concerns with others in the group and receive empathy, understanding, and encouragement.
  • Information sharing: Participants can learn about community resources, advocacy efforts, and strategies for managing various challenges related to caregiving.
  • Education and training: Participants can access educational and training opportunities on topics related to caregiving, such as behavior management and communication strategies.

The TLC Parent Support Group meets virtually over Zoom on the last Wednesday of the month from 2-3 pm. By joining this group, parents and caregivers of individuals with IDD can benefit from the support and experience of other parents, gain valuable information and advice, and learn about community resources. You are not alone!
